چکیده

The mollusc, Lymnaea stagnalis, has been used as a model to study the mechanisms of temperature-dependent processes in the central nervous system. Effects of temperature changes on transmission in monosynaptic connections, made by the FMRFamide-containing neurone VD4 and the giant dopaminergic neurone RPeD1 with follower neurones, were recorded with intracellular microelectrodes. In the temperature range of 4–68C, inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSP) in response to VD4 stimulation were not observed in postsynaptic cells while the IPSPs persisted in the RPeD1 followers. A temperature rise resulted in a sharp increase in the IPSP amplitude in followers of both VD4 and RPeD1. In isolated nervous systems taken from molluscs which have been kept at 4–68C for 2 weeks and more, no coupling between VD4, RPeD1 and synaptically connected cells was seen in the full experimental temperature range. The synaptic coupling recovered only after maintaining the molluscs at a water temperature of 14–168C for at least 2 days. The changes observed in synaptic responses to temperature alterations correspond to the behaviour of the molluscs. q 2002 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Pregnenolone sulfate (PREGS) potentiates the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-mediated Ca-signals in cultured hippocampal neurons. The NMDA receptor family has several different subunits whose expression in neurons has distinct spatial and temporal patterns. To examine subunit speci®city of the PREGS action, we have investigated the effect of PREGS on recombinant GluR 12/z1 (NR2B/NR1) type ...

Crude and corrected amygdaloid volumes were computed from magnetic resonance scans in ten patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), 25 patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and 27 controls. Amygdaloid atrophy was present in FTD (P , 0:005) compared to controls, and a trend for increasing atrophy from controls, through FTD to AD (P for trend ,0.00005) showed that FTD amygdaloid volumes were ...

In this study we investigated the effects of a pulsed radio frequency signal similar to the signal produced by global system for mobile communication telephones (900 MHz carrier, modulated at 217 Hz) on neurons of the avian brain. We found that such stimulation resulted in changes in the amount of neural activity by more than half of the brain cells. Most (76%) of the responding cells increased...

Previous studies found structural brain differences between musicians and non-musicians. In order to determine possible differences in white matter architecture, diffusion tensor imaging was performed on five adult subjects with musical training since early childhood, and seven adult controls. The musicians displayed significantly greater fractional anisotropy (FA) in the genu of the corpus cal...

To investigate the involvement of the periaqueductal gray (PAG) in the control of non-shivering thermogenesis, we tested the effects of electrical or chemical stimulation of the PAG on thermogenesis of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in urethane anesthetized rats. Electrical stimulation (0.1 mA, 33 Hz, 0.5 ms) or application of d,l-homocysteic acid (0.5 mM, 0.3 ml) into the lateral region of the cau...
